RECAP
Seventy-Four players took to the felt in the $250 H.O.R.S.E tournament and it turned out the last person standing was actually a snake. Jack “The Snake” Deutsch of Staten Island, NY (pictured above) excitedly took down the eight-handed final table scoring $5,749 along with a beautiful Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open trophy, a custom framed photograph with an event information plaque and commemorative pin provided by IMPDI. But it wasn’t easy as this final table was a roller coaster ride rivaling anything Disneyworld has to offer.

Coming in second in chips, Peter Walsworth was involved in the strange situation of bouncing between this final table and Day 2 of Event 8. With the seat empty for much of the tournament, the players tried to take advantage of Walsworth being out of his chair but it turned out not even an vacant seat was easily dispatched.

After Nicholas Kost ended Grady Yeager’s day, Walsworth made his way back to the table and promptly crippled Anita Pearl before Jack Deutsch finished her off and took the final table to six. One of the more exciting hands saw Nancy Cope hit a 2-6 straight flush in Stud Hi-Lo against Deutsch putting Deutsch in trouble and adding to her chip lead.

But the next elimination came by way of Faith Klimzack sending Richard Shtrax to the rail hitting trip 7’s on the river in Stud. As it turned out, both she and Nicholas Kost were saved numerous times on river cards before Deutsch send Kost to the rail with pocket aces in Hold ‘Em and we were down to four, including the still mostly absent Walsworth.

But when Walsworth came back to the table on a break, a discussion broke out about a chop which went nowhere but Walsworth did in a Razz hand that saw a great starting hand turned in a payout ticket as he was dealt a jack and then double paired to end his day. Then after Faith Klimzack saw her day end on a river card in Stud, we entered heads-up between Deutsch and Cope.

Cope held around a 3:2 chip lead on Deutsch but a risky chase in Razz by Cope turned it around and put Deutsch in position to win the tourney. Amazingly, the cards seemed to go against Deutsch as pot after pot went Cope’s way capped by another Razz hand where Cope took another river risk with trip 10’s showing but she caught her card on 7th street and Deutsch caught a jack leaving him jack-high to Cope’s ten-high and we played on. Deutsch managed once again to take the lead after two Stud hands where Cope called down with a pair of 3’s and then later sniffed out a bluff to take Cope down to 60k in chips.

Even then, Cope would not go away. Five straight hands where Deutsch had a chance to win, Cope survived. Finally, Deutsch hit an Omaha 8 hand where he had trip 5’s and won the low putting Cope back in the catbird seat. Deutsch finally finished her off in spectaular fashion in Omaha 8 hitting a 2-6 straight of his own on the river scooping the pot and after two and a half hours of heads-up play claimed the championship.

“I could tell in some of the games she was a fairly inexperienced player. She bet on the come a lot throughout the tournament and I managed to take advantage.” said a thrilled Deutsch. “The win is very meaningful to me. So many times I’ve cashed and made final tables but I don’t have enough wins to show for it. So it’s a great feeling to take home this trophy. Thanks to the Seminole Hard Rock and dealers and floor staff who did a terrific job running this tournament. The Hard Rock is now one of my new favorite homes!”

We’ll see if the man from Staten Island, NY they call “The Snake” and his collection of snake card covers will be making more appearances here in this Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open as Deutsch plans to take a couple of days off, enjoy the victory and then make a decision on playing the Main Event.

Congratulations to our Event 10 Champion, Jack Deutsch!
