Recap:

There was no question when the dust settled in Event 17 who deserved to win this title as Emil Soffer played outstanding poker on Day 2 to capture the trophy.

The story early on was Ross Lebo. Lebo had been on cruise control most of the way to the final table. At one point, he held over 2.6 million chips with three tables remaining and was on cruise control to the final table. But along the way Josias Santos and Soffer started doing some damage of their own. But in the major confrontations they had with two tables left, Soffer had mostly gotten the best of Santos.

Two fast eliminations with eleven players remaining got Event 17 to the final table with Brandon Pinkerton going out first. And just when Lebo had slipped to 1.1 million, he came from behind on two consecutive hands eliminating Ravi Shanmugam in 8th and Michael Corbett in 7th. But Lebo could not keep the momentum going. Jamie Gomez started to assert himself and took most of Lebo’s chips before finally ending his night in 5th. Then things got a little strange.

Louis Leo IV had survived a couple of all-ins leaving Sean Yu as the short stack and Gomez had taken the lead away from Soffer. Despite Yu’s position, he insisted during a chop discussion that he should be declared the champion. His bold attempt to convince the other players to end the touranemnt didn’t work out and play continued.

Gomez and Soffer hooked up in a key hand which turned out to the be the difference in the tournament with Soffer barely getting the best of it after a great call putting him back in the lead. After a few more hands, the players agreed to discuss a chop after the end of the next hand. Ironically, the hand ended up putting Yu and Soffer against each other. Yu had decided to press as hard as possible to double up and put himself all-in on the turn. Had Soffer lost the hand, his chip lead would have been in jeopardy. But Soffer picked off Yu’s semi-bluff and sent him out in 5th place.

After the conclusion of the hand, the remaining four players agreed to the chop leaving Soffer the winner following the key hands he’d won against Gomez and Yu.

“I took some chances with 4-5 suited, 7-8 suited and got the cards and it paid off. I thought he (Yu) was bluffing and I had the high pair with the low kicker. It was not an all-in for me so nothing hurt – go for it. It’s a great feeling to win – very nice. I love coming here!”

Congratulations to our Event 17 Champion – Emil Soffer!

$150 No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 26: 25,000/50,000/5,000 Ante

With the pressure of being on the short stack and a possible discussion of a chop on the next hand, Sean Yu decided to risk it all.

After numerous attempts by Yu to get a chop and secure the trophy despite being the shortest stack remaining, Yu decided to challenge the new chip leader Emil Soffer.

After a flop of Qs5d2h, Yu bet 260,000 and Soffer made the call.  With a 5s on the turn, Yu checked and Soffer bet 260,000.  Yu then made the move all-in putting Soffer to a decision that could have cost him the chip lead if he was wrong.  Soffer eventually made the call and it turned out to be the right one.  Yu flipped over 4c4s and Soffer showed his Qd4d for top pair.

After a 2d on the river, Yu was gone in 5th place.  He wins $3,951 for his efforts in Event 17.

$150 No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 26: 25,000/50,000/5,000 Ante

Ross Lebo’s night has finally ended.

After Emil Soffer had bet 100,000 and Jamie Gomez called, Lebo went over the top for his last 410,000 chips.  Soffer got out of the way and Gomez decided make the call.

Gomez: AsQd
Lebo: AcTs

Gomez hit right off the bat on a QhJhAd board leaving Lebo with only a straight possibility to save him. But the board ran out 6d9c and Lebo was headed to the payout rail in 6th place.

Event 17: Gomez Doubles Through Lebo

$150 No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 26: 20,000/40,000/5,000 Ante

Jamie Gomez finally cracked the Ross Lebo code.

Lebo had already just lost a significant hand but Jamie Gomez was the one managed to get all his chips in the middle against him and come out on top.

Gomez turned up QhQs against Lebo’s Ah9d.  After a very quickly run out board of TcTh9s4d2h, Gomez doubled his 840,000 chip stack leaving Lebo around 350,000 and now fighting for his life in Event 17.

Event 17: Michael Corbett Eliminated In 7th Place ($2,425)

$150 No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 25: 15,000/30,000/5,000 Ante

When you’re hot your’re hot.  Ross Lebo is on fire right now and Michael Corbett got burned.

Corbett saw Lebo call his all-in bet and was in great shape as Corbett flipped over KhKs against Lebo’s 6s6c.  A flop of AcQh2d kept Corbett in the lead but the 6d rolled off on the turn and with a river 7s, Corbett’s tournament was over in shocking fashion as Lebo had eliminated two players in a row from way behind.

Michael Corbett finishes in 7th place for $2,425.

Level 25: 15,000/30,000/5,000 Ante

Ross Lebo, who was the dominant chip leader for most of the tournament had fallen to third and needed a shot in the arm.  He got it on a great break against Ravi Shanmugam.

Shanmugam went all-in and was called by Lebo.  Lebo was behind holding AhJd against Shanmugam’s AcKc.   But the fates were not with Shanmugam as the flop came out QdJh4d and with a 5d3h board running out, Lebo took the pot and eliminated Shanmugam.

Ravi Shanmugam finishes in 8th place for $1,721.

Level 24: 12,000/24,000/4,000 Ante

Brandon Pinkerton’s short stack just ran into a wall.

Pinkerton was all-in against Jamie Gomez and Josias Santos.  After Gomez and Santos checked a 3s3c2h flop, the 4c hit on the turn. Gomez bet 125,000 and Santos folded.  Gomez turned over Ac5c for the wheel leaving Pinkerton’s 9cTs drawing dead.

Pinkerton finishes in 9th place winning $1,252.
